Grand Chapter Special Project

06-29-2016 09:31:00
The 2016-2017 Stars of Service special project is the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (VABVI) Peer Assisted Learning & Support (PALS) group program for adults. This program allows our adult clients to cope with their vision loss surrounded by others who are facing similar challenges. Many are new to having a visual impairment, had to give up driving or hobbies due to their change in vision, and thus feel isolated and even depressed. PALS meetings enable our older clients to get together to discuss the social, emotional, and practical effects of vision loss. They discuss coping strategies, try out adaptive technology to assist with various tasks, and support one another in a social setting.PALS meetings are held twice per week in 11 different locations across the state. These meetings give our adult clients a chance to discuss the practical, social, and emotional effects of their vision loss. PALS group also gives these clients a chance to share coping strategies and socialize so they feel comfortable in their homes and communities again. They listen to guest speakers, many of whom are blind or visually impaired themselves. PALS group members also take part in activities in and around their community. These outings are important for the personal growth of our clients because they increase confidence and promote involvement in the community. Adults who participate in PALS groups become more comfortable traveling around their community and as a result a more likely to maintain their independence and sense of belonging.Worthy Grand Matron Sherrill Gould and Worthy Grand Patron James Chancey have a goal to raise $20,000 for this special project. We are off to a great start! As of June 25th we have raised  $1,333.26 of which $106 is from apron sales.

Update on “Elevator Speech”

06-09-2015 14:10:00
If you attended the mid-winter meeting this past February, you participated in an exercise in developing what is called an “elevator speech.”  The name "elevator Speech" is the idea that it should be possible to deliver what the Eastern Star is all about in the time it takes to take an elevator ride, which is approximately thirty seconds to two minutes. The term itself comes from meeting someone in the elevator. If the conversation inside the elevator in those few seconds is interesting, the conversation will continue after the elevator ride or end in exchange of contact information or a scheduled meeting.

Vermont Grand Chapter Website Gets a New Look

06-08-2015 10:09:00
Many of you know that our webmaster Sister Nancy Gross and her husband Dan have moved on to a much sunnier place, Las Vegas that is!  Our loss is Nevada’s gain.  So now it is time to pass on the torch.  Nancyhad a skill set that is rare in our Order, she was a true web “Master.”  She developed our website from scratch using special software.  To pass on the website, the new “webmaster” would be required to learn new software as well as take a few classes.  As this is more than many of us can handle, we decided to change our website to a more "plug and play" platform so that future webmasters need not be "masters."  That means that it is not as fancy or customized for each Session as Nancy’s version but all the information is there.  The website address has not changed.  It is still www.oes-vt.org
